The Hobbiton Movie Set is located on a picturesque family-run farm, just 8km west of Hinuera and 10km southwest of Matamata, in the Waikato region of New Zealand. Known globally as the real-life home of The Shire, this enchanting destination is a must-see for fans of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
Sir Peter Jackson first discovered the location during an aerial scouting trip in 1998. With its rolling green hills and peaceful countryside, the site reminded him of the English countryside he imagined for The Shire. After successful negotiations, the farm's owner, Ian Alexander, allowed construction of the iconic Hobbiton village on his land.
After filming The Lord of the Rings, the set was dismantled. However, public interest in the location soared, and the Alexanders began offering guided tours in 2002. When filming resumed for The Hobbit trilogy in 2009, the set was rebuilt as a permanent attraction, allowing visitors to experience the magic firsthand all year round.
Today, the site features 44 hobbit holes, the Party Tree, the iconic arched bridge, and the Green Dragon Inn. Knowledgeable guides share fascinating stories and behind-the-scenes details about the filmmaking process, making this a truly immersive experience.
Whether you're a die-hard Tolkien fan or simply curious, the Hobbiton tour delights visitors of all ages. It's a photographer’s dream, with lush gardens, charming homes, and storybook scenery. Tours are available year-round (except Christmas Day), with longer hours in summer. Spring is especially stunning as the gardens burst into bloom.
General admission is NZD $79 for adults, $39.50 for children aged 9–16, and free for children 8 and under (with a paying adult). Each tour includes a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Banquet tours and private tours are also available by request.
In 2016, Hobbiton celebrated International Hobbit Day (Bilbo and Frodo's birthday) with a sunrise tour and a special breakfast banquet. The set is also available for private events, including weddings and corporate functions, adding to its popularity.
