Waitomo Glowworm Caves

A Must-Do Experience in New Zealand

Waitomo is a small village in the North Island of New Zealand, famous for its incredible network of limestone caves. Known as a hotspot for adventure and natural beauty, the Waitomo Caves have attracted visitors for over a century. With more than 300 known caves in the region, the most popular are the Waitomo Glowworm Cave, Ruakuri Cave, and Aranui Cave.

The Glowworm Cave, in particular, is home to thousands of Arachnocampa luminosa — a glowworm species found only in New Zealand. Their soft blue light transforms the underground world into a galaxy of living stars.

First discovered in 1887 by Māori Chief Tane Tinorau, the caves became a government-owned attraction in 1906. However, the land and caves are still owned by the descendants of the original Māori guardians. Today, many of the guides and staff are direct descendants of Chief Tinorau and his wife Huti, sharing their heritage and stories with pride.

The caves are around 3 hours’ drive from Auckland and 2 hours from Rotorua, making them perfect for a day trip or part of a longer North Island journey. A highlight of the experience is the silent boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto, where the only light comes from the luminous glowworms above, creating an unforgettable, dreamlike atmosphere.

Visitors can choose from a variety of tour options — from relaxing boat rides to more adventurous black water rafting experiences through the Ruakuri Cave. Whether you're an adrenaline seeker or a nature lover, Waitomo offers something truly magical for everyone.
